DESIGN: BETSY THE ARTIST

Betsy has worked as an artist her entire life. Her professional training began in 1976 at California College of Arts & Crafts and after one semester, was accepted as an animation trainee for the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California. Two months later she was hired full time on ‘The Rescuers’ animated feature and continued to work in animation, while touring as a Disney spokesperson. At age 26, Betsy left animation and made the move to New York City and while working independently for Disney there, began expanding her horizons into other artistic fields. Working now in illustration, character design and product development, and Betsy’s diverse background opened the door for a wide variety of projects and clients.

Betsy’s foray into licensing and product design began with Disney, Miss Piggy, Warner Bros., Sea World, Turner Entertainment and Body Glove footwear. She then transitioned to publishing and book illustration for Simon & Schuster’s the ‘Pollan Planners’, while creating puppet characters for Faerietale Theater.

Betsy’s experience continued to open new doors. The Coca-Cola polar bear commercials then became a hit and Betsy was enlisted to develop their first licensing program and style guide featuring the bears. Developing the bears personality and creating the line art for product, Betsy’s designs began appearing everywhere on Coca-Cola products, including Bradford Exchange.

This led to her own giftware lines at Papel and designing the tour merchandise for rock icons Jimmy Buffett, John Fogerty, New Orleans legend Zigaboo Modeliste and the Nervis Bros., CD covers for violinist Andy Stein and logos for the Natural History Museum’s ‘Rhythms of LA’ concert.

Meanwhile her illustrated comics for the CA State Firefighters safety program were spotted by the NY Ad Council and Betsy was contacted by the Dept. of Homeland Security to create a mascot and illustrate their ‘Ready Kids’ web-site and educational materials for Scholastic, teaching preparation and response. She has provided illustrations for Shirley MacLaine’s web-site and character design for Contour Entertainment’s theme-park attractions. She has created and developed her own various lines of Christmas ornaments for Kurt Adler, NY, now in her third year.

Betsy continues to design Jimmy Buffett’s tour merchandise and work with various clients, as well as developing her own lines of licensed products.
